Why Visit Lijiang?
Lijiang sits at 2,400 meters in northwest Yunnan, historically the stronghold of the Naxi people — a matriarchal ethnic group with their own unique Dongba script and musical tradition. The UNESCO-listed Old Town (Dayan) is an extraordinary labyrinth of stone-paved lanes, canal waterways, and traditional architecture that has remained largely intact since the Ming dynasty. Behind the town, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain's 5,596-meter summit provides a constant, humbling backdrop. Lijiang is one of China's most visited destinations — for good reason, though the old town's tourism density has grown significantly.
Top Attractions
1. Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城 / 大研古镇)
The UNESCO site is best experienced by getting lost in the back lanes away from the commercial Sifang Street core. The eastern quarter near the Water Wheel is the most photogenic; the lanes north of Sifang Street are quieter and more residential. The old town is most magical at dawn (before 8am) and in early evening when lanterns light up the waterways. Wander to the viewpoint at the Lion Hill Pavilion for panoramic views.
2. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山)
The sacred mountain of the Naxi people rises to 5,596m and is visible from the old town on clear days. The Glacier Park cable car ascends to 4,506m — the highest accessible point in China reachable by cable car. Altitude sickness is a real risk above 4,000m; oxygen bags are sold at the top (¥15–20 each). Book cable car tickets weeks in advance online — daily numbers are strictly limited.
3. Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡)
One of Asia's greatest trekking routes — a 2-day hike along the Jinsha River gorge between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain. The high trail (28km) offers spectacular views from 2,600–2,900m elevation. The lower trail is easier but less scenic. Guesthouses at Halfway House and Tea Horse Guest House are legendary stops. Book ahead in peak season. Start from Qiaotou Village (2 hours from Lijiang by bus).
4. Shuhe Ancient Town (束河古镇)
A quieter, less-commercialized Naxi settlement 4km from Lijiang Old Town. The same traditional architecture and canals but far fewer tourists. Excellent base for those wanting the aesthetic without the crowds. Horse riding to nearby Naxi villages is popular here.
5. Naxi Music Performances
Naxi ancient music (纳西古乐) has been designated UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Evening performances at the Naxi Ancient Music Association feature elderly musicians playing instruments and compositions that date to the Tang dynasty. Genuinely moving — not a tourist show.
6. Black Dragon Pool Park (黑龙潭公园)
The park at the foot of Lion Hill has the classic postcard view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflected in the pool, with a traditional Naxi pavilion in the foreground. Free entry; best at dawn for the reflection and clear mountain views.
Lijiang Food
- Naxi Baba (纳西粑粑): Flatbread stuffed with various fillings — the Naxi version of roujiamo. Grilled on a wood fire and served hot from street vendors.
- Lijiang Pork (丽江腊排骨): Smoked and cured pork ribs cooked with local spices — a staple at every local family table.
- Yak Meat: Available in restaurants serving Tibetan cuisine — yak hotpot and yak butter tea are worth trying at altitude.
- Yunnan Ham (云南火腿): The Xuanwei ham from Yunnan is China's answer to prosciutto — aged, intensely flavored, served thinly sliced.
Altitude advice: Lijiang sits at 2,400m; Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reaches 4,506m by cable car. Take it easy the first day — avoid alcohol and heavy food, drink lots of water. ChinaPass has an altitude sickness guide and emergency contact information for the region.

Best Time to Visit
March–May (spring flowers, clear skies) and September–November (golden autumn, stable weather) are ideal. October offers the most stable weather for Tiger Leaping Gorge. June–August brings monsoon rains but also lush green mountains and lower prices. January–February is cold (0°C at night) but the mountain views are clearest and the old town most peaceful.
