Why Visit Guilin?
The ancient saying goes: "Guilin's scenery is the finest under heaven" (桂林山水甲天下). The limestone karst peaks rising dramatically from the Li River have been inspiring Chinese poets and painters for over 1,400 years. Today, the region also includes Yangshuo's backpacker-friendly valley, the remarkable Longji Rice Terraces, and some of China's best cave systems. Guilin is the most visitor-friendly of China's nature destinations — English is spoken widely in the tourism industry, and logistics for independent travelers are well-developed.
Top Attractions
1. Li River Cruise (漓江游船)
The 83km river journey from Guilin to Yangshuo is China's most iconic boat trip. The official cruise (4–5 hours) passes the peaks featured on the 20-yuan banknote. Book through hotels or tour agencies; the government-regulated boats all follow the same route. Arrive early as the fleet departs in convoy around 9am. The return journey from Yangshuo to Guilin is by bus — a good option since you see the river going south and explore Yangshuo on arrival.
2. Yangshuo (阳朔)
The small town at the end of the Li River cruise is the region's best base for exploration. West Street (Xijie) is touristy but pleasant; the surrounding countryside is extraordinary. Rent a bicycle or electric scooter and explore the valley roads between karst peaks — Moon Hill, the Big Banyan Tree, and the Yulong River are all accessible without a guide. Many travelers prefer staying in Yangshuo rather than Guilin.
3. Longji Rice Terraces (龙脊梯田)
Two hours north of Guilin, the Dragon's Backbone terraces are among Asia's most spectacular agricultural landscapes. Zhuang and Yao minority villages are scattered across the stepped hillsides. The terraces look different in each season: flooded silver in spring (April–May), lush green in summer, golden in harvest time (September–October), and snow-dusted in winter. Stay overnight in a village guesthouse to experience the landscape at dawn.
4. Reed Flute Cave (芦笛岩)
A spectacular 240-million-year-old limestone cave illuminated with colored lights. The 500-meter walk passes extraordinary stalactites and stalagmites with names like "Crystal Palace" and "Dragon Pagoda." The colored lighting is garish but effective. Allow 1 hour.
5. Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山)
Guilin's symbol — a limestone hill shaped exactly like an elephant drinking from the Li River. Best viewed from the opposite bank at sunrise or sunset. The park around it is small but pleasant for a morning walk.
6. Yulong River Bamboo Rafting (遇龙河)
A more intimate alternative to the Li River cruise — flat bamboo rafts (with seats) are poled by locals along this quieter tributary through rice paddies and karst scenery. No motor noise, just birds and water. Best organized from Yangshuo.
Local Food in Guilin
- Guilin Rice Noodles (桂林米粉): The local obsession — thin rice noodles in a rich beef and pork bone broth, topped with braised pork, peanuts, and pickled vegetables. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner — locals eat these at every meal.
- Beer Fish (啤酒鱼): Yangshuo's specialty — fresh river fish braised in local beer with pickled peppers, garlic, and ginger. Every restaurant on West Street serves it; quality varies wildly.
- Stuffed Li River Snails (田螺): Wok-fried with chili and herbs — messy and delicious.
- Minority cuisine: Longji village guesthouses serve Zhuang minority cooking — bamboo rice (sticky rice cooked in bamboo tubes), smoked pork, and wild vegetables.
Li River cruise tip: Clear weather is everything. Check the forecast before booking — misty conditions can obscure the peaks entirely. If weather is poor, consider the Yulong River bamboo rafting instead, which is beautiful even in light rain. ChinaPass has weather forecasts for all 20 cities.

Best Time to Visit
April–October is the green season with lush scenery but also rain (the Li River level must be high enough for the cruise). The Longji terraces peak in September–October for harvest gold. Winter (November–February) offers clear skies, bare rice terraces, and far fewer tourists. The Li River cruise sometimes stops in dry winter months when water levels drop too low.
